Grok by xAI Gains Ground with New Memory Feature

- Elon Musk’s xAI has created a personalised memory functionality for its Grok chatbot, which recalls previous talks to offer tailored responses.
- This function is currently unavailable in the United Kingdom and the European Union, most likely due to legislative barriers, and there is no known timeframe for its implementation.
Elon Musk’s AI plan, xAI, is slowly approaching greatness. Its chatbot, Grok, is already looking like an adept challenger in the AI assistant space, thanks to a new feature that allows it to recall things you’ve said to it before, similar to what ChatGPT and Gemini do.
The new memory function, which was introduced on April 16, 2025, will now allow Grok to save information from past discussions. So, the more you use it, the more it ‘learns’ about your tastes, allowing you to fine-tune the personalisation of the results. Ask for a meal recommendation or travel guidance, and it will eventually provide more tailored recommendations based on what it has learnt about you over time.
It’s a step that takes Grok closer to its more seasoned competition. ChatGPT has had the memory feature for a while now, which was recently updated for context selection from your entire chat history. Gemini also does memory, persisting answers to questions based on who is asking them.
This kind of openness about data usage will be welcomed with open arms in an increasingly digital, privacy-concerned world.
Currently, the memory feature of Grok is in beta and is available on Grok.com or through the iOS and Android apps. There is a catch, though – it is not available for users from the UK or the EU just yet. This is probably due to some stringent data protection regulations, such as the UK GDPR, even though xAI has not precisely given an explanation or timeline for when it may be rolled out.
For users who have access, memory management is very straightforward and can be switched off via data controls within settings. If there is something listed that you want Grok to forget, depending on the memory, there will be a delete icon you can tap on in the chat session. The ability to delete memories is live on the web version, with Android coming soon.
Grok also has a memory feature in the works for its integration with X (formerly Twitter); however, no launch date has been given.
xAI seems to be working to bridge the gap between Grok and some of the well-known competing AIs. With lots of ground to cover in terms of adoption and polish, features like this show that it is a contender in the AI mob.
That said, there are users in the UK who might also be feeling a sense of exclusion. When an AI assistant becomes an indispensable part of life, from handling schedules to offering fine-tuned recommendations, a digital assistant that genuinely remembers the user is a total game-changer.
Until this feature migrates across the Atlantic, UK users have to wait and see. However, should xAI keep going for this, Grok might end up growing into a chatbot that could relate to you, not just answer your questions.
