X Hit by Widespread Outages – Was It a Cyberattack?

X
  • Social network X went offline on Monday, and thousands of users were unable to log in or access the site, prompting fears about cybersecurity and platform reliability.
  • Critics are beginning to complain about it, wondering if R&D has made X increasingly vulnerable to disruption caused by Musk’s cost-cutting measures.

On Monday, several thousand netizens across the globe were left frustrated as the popular social media site, earlier known as Twitter, faced serious downtime. From signing-in problems to problems related to posting loading failures, these have brought fresh doubts about the platform’s resilience, and the idea that it might have experienced a cyberattack is not far-fetched, as some onlookers believe.

X Users Left in the Dark

With an estimated 40,000 complaints at the outage’s peak, reports began to pour in early in the day. Users were affected across the U.K. and the U.S., with a number of them managing to access their accounts and then losing access again.

This outage was, for many, a reminder of previous incidents. With Elon Musk significantly downsizing the team, there have been frequently occurring tech glitches. The general question looms: Can the infrastructure support Musk’s ambitious plans?

A Growing Fear of Cyber Attacks

The exact cause of the outage remains unclear, but speculation is widespread. Some cybersecurity experts raised concerns about a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack—where in hackers flood systems with traffic to overload them.

Musk himself has acknowledged the situation, sharing a tweet: “We are looking into some service interruptions. Will provide updates soon.” He, however, did not confirm whether it was a cyber attack he was indirectly pointing towards.

Pressure Platform

Since the rebranding of Twitter to X, Musk has advanced towards a complete every-app transformation. Is the platform equipped to sustain such a transition with all these woes?

The Guardian and Business Standard both suggested how the cost-cutting measures had left the system open to problems—primarily engineering and technical support. This said a bit of cost reduction is generally accepted, but “too much” simply causes more issues.

Loss of Faith for Advertisers and Consumers?

While everyday woes have become problematic in and of themselves, they are doubly troubling for advertisers. Criticism of content moderation and safety, and the like, is already causing a lot of big brands to pull out their money. This latest outage may force them to rethink using the product at all.

Frustrated consumers took to other social media platforms to express their woes. There were those calling for X to improve communication, while others were exchanging jokes about the app being “more of a crasher than a Windows 98 PC.”

What Lies Ahead for X?

The big question remains if X can improve its reliability or if this is mere evidence of a larger, systemic problem. X’s work with online threats keeps on mounting, while Musk’s grand plans to put his finger on the heart of the matter with the platform are only halfway there.

Will X be what Musk dreams it to be, or will these bumps in the road wind up defining a business norm? Only time will tell!
