Tesla Issues Major Recall as Cybertruck Trim Poses Road Hazard

Cybertrucks
  • Tesla recalled approximately 46,000 Cybertrucks in the United States due to a defect where the cant rail—a stainless-steel exterior trim panel—can delaminate and detach from the vehicle, posing a potential road hazard.
  • It is a free fix for all Cybertruck owners that would take about thirty minutes.

As all these recalls were triggered just over a couple of months after the much-celebrated electric truck’s launch, they raised serious doubts about Tesla’s quality control and production standards even before entering the market. News of the recall broke just a few months after many were finally able to enjoy this long-awaited vehicle.

Loose Trim Prompts Cybertruck Recall

The NHTSA has classified the recall in question as more than 46,000 Cybertrucks produced between November 2023 and February 2025, which may have trim pieces that could become loose or fall off in normal conditions. This detachment of the panel from the vehicle could pose a potential road hazard for others, increasing the risk of collisions.

Furthermore, Tesla has informed the NHTSA that it intends to issue a recall for the exterior trim panel in question which can detach due to adhesive failure over time. The automaker states that there have been no injuries reported related to this concern, and this recall has been initiated solely as a precautionary measure.

Potential Financial and Brand Implications

Tesla is already confronting slower EV sales growth and stricter oversight, and this Cybertruck recall will add pressure on the company. Although Tesla’s stock fell on 20th March, 2025, the company said that it can weather this due to its strong cash reserve. Manufacturing, compliance and quality control are under scrutiny as there was a previous recall in 2023 of over 2 million vehicles for Autopilot flaws.

Tesla’s Road Ahead

Despite multiple Cybertruck recalls, Tesla is planning to ramp up production at its expanding Giga Texas plant. These setbacks highlight the challenge of scaling EV production while keeping quality and safety as top priority. Consumer trust is an important factor for competing in a crowded and ever-changing market. As the EV market matures, Tesla must deliver reliable and high-quality Cybertrucks to maintain its customer base.
