25 Years in the Making: What’s Inside Patek Philippe’s New Cubitus Collection?

Patek Philippe
  • Patek Philippe has released its first new collection in 25 years, the Cubitus line, which includes three models that recreate the “elegant sporty” style.
  • The series contains two stainless steel models and one platinum model, each with advanced technology and novel features including a tiny rotor and an immediate jump mechanism.
  • This new range, which also includes matching cufflinks, comes at an important time in the luxury watch industry, appealing to collectors despite changes in secondhand pricing.

This week, famous Swiss timepiece Patek Philippe debuted its highly awaited Cubitus collection, the brand’s first new line in a record 25 years. Patek Philippe, known for its excellent craftsmanship and timeless elegance, has released its latest offering at a time when luxury watch prices have stabilised due to sustained demand, particularly among younger collectors who embraced premium timepieces during the pandemic.

A Blend of Elegance and Sportiness

The Cubitus line features three separate versions, two in stainless steel and one in platinum. This new collection reinterprets Patek Philippe’s renowned “elegant sporty” look. The steel models stand out with colourful dials, including a two-tone variant that mixes steel and rose gold for a classic look. The platinum edition has a distinctive design that includes a large-format date, moon phase tracker, and day-of-the-week indicator.

Patek Philippe has incorporated cutting-edge technology into these watches, including an ultrathin, self-winding micro-rotor and an instantaneous-jump mechanism that synchronises the multiple displays with astonishing precision—within just 18 milliseconds. The company has filed six patent applications for these inventions, solidifying its position as a horological industry leader.

Accessories to Match

In addition to the new watches, Patek Philippe has released a line of cufflinks to match the Cubitus collection. These cufflinks have a white-gold frame that reflects the design of the watch cases, providing an exquisite accent that complements the entire look.

Navigating Market Changes

Patek Philippe’s unveiling of the Cubitus series is appropriate, particularly given the changes in demand and cost in the luxury watch market. While secondhand prices for luxury watches have dropped, there is still a strong demand for new pieces, particularly those that exemplify workmanship and sophistication.

With a history dating back to 1839, Patek Philippe is a member of the coveted “Holy Trinity” of watchmaking, with Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. The Cubitus line expands on the brand’s previous collection, the Twenty4, introduced in 1999, which appealed to modern ladies.

Technical Innovations

The Cubitus collection revolves around innovation. The flagship model, the Instantaneous Grand Date, Day, and Moon Phases, has a distinctive square platinum casing with rounded sides. Its blue sunburst dial, along with a navy blue strap, makes it stand out. This watch features a revolutionary movement that integrates the grand date, moon phase, and day indicators, overcoming substantial technical obstacles to ensure flawless operation.

Patek Philippe’s experts built the new mechanisms on the well-known calibre 240 ultra-thin self-winding movement. This movement, known for its dependability and small form, enables the seamless integration of the intricate features featured in the Cubitus series.

Embracing A New Aesthetic

The Cubitus series is intended to evoke a “casual chic” look that combines aggressiveness and grace. The square case, measuring 45mm in diameter, is both striking and wearing, with a thickness of just over 8mm. Each model exemplifies a dedication to great craftsmanship, with precisely finished dials and horizontal embossed patterns.

The line features three models, each designed to match high demand despite limited annual production. The Ref. 5822P-001, with its technical sophistication, is projected to be a popular piece. The stainless steel options—Ref. 5821/1A-001 with a green dial and Ref. 5821/AR-001 in two-tone rose gold and steel—enhance the collection’s appeal.
