Introducing the BYD Shark: A Tech-Packed Hybrid Pickup Truck
- BYD unveiled its Shark pickup truck in Mexico, targeting the Americas and Australia initially.
- The Shark features plug-in hybrid technology, impressive acceleration, extensive range, and advanced tech and safety features.
BYD introduced its latest creation, the “Shark” pickup truck, at a big event in Mexico on May 15th. They’re aiming to sell it in the Americas and Australia, and maybe in China later on.
This truck can go pretty fast, up to 160 kilometers per hour. It comes in two versions: GL and GS. The GL starts at about 899,980 Mexican pesos (or roughly 386,245 yuan or $58,000 USD), while the GS is a bit pricier at 969,800 Mexican pesos (or about 416,210 yuan or $62,500 USD). You can get it in three colors: Pallas White, Marmara Black, and Atlantis Gray. And size-wise, it’s about 5457mm long, 1971mm wide, and 1925mm tall, with a 3260mm wheelbase.
Under the hood, the BYD Shark packs a plug-in hybrid engine with two motors: one in the front and one in the rear. The front one can kick out 170kW of power and 310Nm of torque, while the rear one delivers 150kW and 340Nm. With that setup, it can go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.7 seconds.
It’s got a 29.58kWh battery, giving it an electric range of 100 kilometers. But when you combine gas and electric, it can go up to 840 kilometers. BYD says it sips fuel at about 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
Inside, it’s all high-tech with a 10.25-inch LCD instrument panel, a huge 12.8-inch touchscreen for entertainment, and a fancy 12-inch head-up display. Plus, it plays nice with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
And safety-wise, it’s got you covered with a 360° camera system and a chassis camera, giving you a full view around the truck.
So, the BYD Shark is BYD’s new entry into the mid-sized pickup market, and it’s starting its journey outside of China.
