In an impressive feat, Huawei Technologies has managed to sell 1.6 million units of its highly sought-after Mate 60 Pro handset within just six weeks, according to reports from a research firm. This achievement comes as Huawei continues to thrive in the high-end smartphone market, defying industry expectations of a slowdown.

Notably, more than 400,000 units of the Mate 60 Pro were sold within the last two weeks, a period that coincided with Apple’s launch of the iPhone 15 in mainland China, as revealed by Counterpoint Research. While iPhone 15 sales in its initial 17 days experienced a 4.5% dip compared to its predecessor, specific figures were not disclosed.

Huawei’s strategic move to introduce the premium Mate 60 Pro in late August has proven to be a significant success. Analysts believe that the phone incorporates a domestically produced chip, signifying a notable breakthrough for the company in the face of longstanding U.S. technology sanctions.

The demand for the Mate 60 Pro has been nothing short of extraordinary, with available stock quickly selling out upon arrival, leading to an impression of constant scarcity, as highlighted by Counterpoint senior analyst Ivan Lam.

In the broader global smartphone market, the third quarter witnessed an 8% contraction, marking its lowest level in a decade due to subdued demand for major brands. However, Huawei, alongside its former subsidiary Honor, and Transsion Group, managed to buck the trend by recording year-on-year growth during the same period.

In China, August saw smartphone shipments holding steady, with a marginal 0.03% year-on-year increase, amounting to 18.99 million handsets, according to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications (CAICT).

Huawei‘s success in the high-end smartphone segment and the strong reception of the Mate 60 Pro underscore the company’s resilience and innovative prowess in navigating the challenges posed by the global tech landscape.
