NTU Launches New Degree Programmes in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences to Prepare Students for a New World of Connectivity
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) is launching seven new undergraduate degree programmes in the humanities, arts and social sciences.
Visitors to the NTU Open House 2016 held this Saturday, 5 Feb, from 9.30am to 6.30pm, can find out more about these four-year direct honours degrees that will be offered by the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) in August with the start of the new academic year.
Six of these new programmes are double major programmes offered by the college’s School of Art, Design and Media, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.
Leading to a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in both majors, these six programmes with a strong interdisciplinary theme, are designed for high achievers.
The new offerings include a first in Singapore – a combination of English Literature with Art History. This double major programme is aimed at grooming professionals to be adept at analysing and interpreting information spanning the great works of art from the Renaissance period to present day.
Another new programme is a joint communication and business degree leading to an honours degree in Communication Studies, with a second major in Business. This is offered by the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information in conjunction with the Nanyang Business School.
Explaining the need for the new degree programmes, Senior Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education, Professor Kam Chan Hin, said, “Employers today look for graduates who demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as intellectual curiosity. These qualities are necessary to tackle problems creatively from new perspectives across different disciplines. We expect these new interdisciplinary programmes to give students the extra edge that will boost their careers.”
Interdisciplinary double major programmes
The new programmes are:
- – Double Major in Economics and Media Analytics
- – Double Major in Economics and Psychology
- – Double Major in Economics and Public Policy & Global Affairs
- – Double Major in English Literature and Art History
- – Double Major in Psychology and Linguistics & Multilingual Studies
- – Double Major in Psychology and Media Analytics
Amongst them, the Double Major in Economics/Psychology and Media Analytics will enable students to understand complex data, and effectively engage the shifting social and digital media landscape.
Students will gain high-level competency in evaluating organisational opportunities and risks in today’s dynamic and ever-changing media scene. It will also sharpen their analytical ability with respect to the complex information found in web and social media applications.
The Double Major in English Literature and Art History will help professionals in their visual and critical awareness so they can effectively contribute to Singapore’s exciting Arts and Culture environment.
Professor Alan Chan, Dean of NTU’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, said, “The new Double Major Bachelor of Arts programme provides students with good depth in two academic disciplines, while at the same time offers sufficient flexibility in the curriculum for students to explore their interests outside of their majors.”
Joint communication and business programme
In addition, the Bachelor of Communication Studies with a Second Major in Businessprogramme combines the strengths of two of Singapore’s most renowned academic schools – the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, and the Nanyang Business School.
Taught by top international faculty, communication students will gain advanced leadership skills and specialised knowledge in marketing and finance, all of which will offer them distinct advantages in their careers.
Students will follow one of several existing concentrations from communication studies, while taking business and accountancy courses from six specialist tracks – Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Business Analytics, Operations, and Strategic Human Resource.
Students will also gain high-level competency in evaluating organisational opportunities and risks in today’s dynamic and ever-changing media scene. It will sharpen their analytical ability with respect to the variety of information provided by web and social media applications.
Associate Professor Neil Murphy, Associate Dean (Undergraduate) of NTU’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences said, “The new double major and the collaboration between the Wee Kim Wee School and Nanyang Business School, show yet again how genuinely innovative the college has become in the humanities, arts, and social sciences – these are exciting times for students in our disciplines.”
With these seven new offerings, NTU will offer 110 undergraduate degree programmes for the new Academic Year 2016/2017 which starts in August.
